Internship Work
I had the opportunity to complete my internship at an urban middle school that services students in the sixth through eighth grade. Through this internship and my Educational Leadership program at Kent State University I had the opportunity to speak with many leaders across grade levels in urban schools and rural schools. When meeting these leaders, I learned about their practices and the research behind them and reviewed data to see if the implementation was successful. I shared this information with my administrators and built a team that worked to improve our discipline data for the upcoming school year. This work would also help to improved the climate and culture in our school community.
Throughout my internship, I analyzed data and collaborated with my team of grade level teachers, exploratory teachers, intervention specialist, RTI coordinator, PBIS and Care team members, administration, a parents and students. When analyzing the data, I was cam up with a challenge statement to improve the climate and culture. The statement was: How can we decrease the number of Success ( in school suspension) referral's amongst all students. Data was collected by the Success teacher through student referrals to the Success room. These referrals were broken down by race, gender, IEP/504, grade, time, data, period, staff member, and reason.
The data when then used to identify when, why and which students were loosing instruction time due to being in Success. Data will also show if current supports and interventions are effective. When starting this work, I passed out a needs assessments to families, students, teachers, and community members to evaluate what supports they needed and there thoughts on current practices. I also visited two a rural district and an urban district and discussed with their administrators how they handle behavior, scheduling, parent involvement, and how they improve their overall climate and culture. Then this information was brought back and shared with the team an action plan was developed.
The challenges in the needs assessment and through discipline data showed that the staff did not have a strong rapport with each other or families. It also showed that we need more intervention in the classrooms to decrease the number of students leaving out of the room in math and language arts. We also found that building wide we need more staff presence in the halls. In the action plan for the upcoming school year, staff members would take a bus on a pd day and get out in the community and see the neighborhoods of the students in which they serve and interact with families and pass out free items. Also, staff would spend time building rapport with one another and coming up with plans in their teams and then building wide to be more present in the halls. Additionally, to implement this plan we will increase the number of interventions in the schedule and provide supports in the areas of math and language arts. We would also look at student schedule and not sen entire grade levels to expiatory's at one time.
My internship and the work that I have completed throughout my graduate school has prepared me to lead a school community to success. As a leader, I will support those that I serve and ensure that all programs are research based before they are implemented . I will build a school community that is aware of social justices and educate and assist my staff in building a culture that is diverse and implements a universal design for learning where all students can achieve success.
